We later learnt hat the Martians are quite anemic. But, the film uses the Martians as an elaborate metaphor for Clayton's own anemia; that is, his need to leave the sheltered world of his science laboratory, and academia, and experience life first hand. (Atomic Bomb Cinema, 83-89)
